Bachelor of Science in Statistics
Go beyond the numbers. Statistics at the University of St. Thomas integrates sophisticated technology with modern statistical methods to solve real-world problems. You will learn mathematical and statistical fundamentals, technological skills for acquiring and managing data and advanced methods of data analysis and visualization throughout your undergraduate career.
Why Study Statistics at St. Thomas?
Statistics is a joint collaboration between the and Departments at St. Thomas. Not only will you gain a strong understanding of statistical methods, but you will also gain technological, communication and critical thinking skills needed to analyze big data. You will be able to take classes focusing on topics like data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence, predictive modeling and more depending on your interests and goals. Our graduates go on to work in a variety of industries as risk analysts, bio-statisticians, epidemiologists, data scientists and more.
Making Sense of the Data
Course Requirements
You will start by developing a strong mathematical foundation by diving deep into classes about descriptive statistics, probability, inference, predictive modeling and more. You will also foster your computer programming and communication skills while completing electives focused on topics like Bayesian models and biostatistics.
Four-Year Plan
Beyond the foundational statistics coursework, you have access to a wide array of courses and electives focusing on spatial statistics, simulation and modeling, data visualization and more. We recommend connecting with a member of our faculty to develop a four-year plan that matches your interests and goals.
Sample Four-Year Plans
Degrees Awarded
- Bachelor of Science in Statistics with a concentration in Applied Statistics
- Bachelor of Science in Statistics with a concentration in Mathematical Statistics
- Minor in Statistics with a concentration in Applied Statistics
- Minor in Statistics with a concentration in Mathematical Statistics
Science, Mathematics and Engineering Scholarships
On-Campus Jobs and Research Opportunities
Statistics students have the opportunity to work on-campus as a tutor and/or grader for introductory statistics courses. Faculty within the Computer and Information Sciences Department also hire students to participate in professional research opportunities as well.
